John I. Lough, 83, died
Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, at Liberty Commons Skilled Care Center in North
Chatham after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson's disease and
Parkinson's related dementia. John was another long term active member
of FARA up until a few years ago when he could no longer make it to
meetings or events. John was a regular at Field Day for many years and
enjoyed working on the set up and take down crews. He also was deeply
involved in the beginnings of FARA's licensing classes along with
several other OT members.
John was born in
Pembroke, Bermuda on March 14, 1924, son of Mary Wainwright Lough and
Francis Inglis John Lough. He was raised in Devonshire, Bermuda.
He served in the Bermuda military during World War II, and he was a
mechanic on the Flying Boats for Pan American Airways in Bermuda.
John immigrated to the United States in 1948. He lived and worked in New
York City, Philadelphia, New Jersey, and then retired to Brewster, in
1987. He schooled at RCA Institute and Brooklyn Polytechnic, N.Y.
John had a long and unique career in television from its earliest days.
First he worked for NBC-TV, N.Y., as a supervisor, engineer and
cameraman. Next, he owned and operated an independent mobile TV camera
unit company. He then worked for ABC-TV, N.Y., as manager of broadcast
operations and engineering.
During his 40 years in broadcasting, John had the incredible fortune and
honor to personally provide and manage TV camera coverage and TV
broadcast pickup for many historic events including President John F.
Kennedy's Inauguration; Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s funeral; the Nikita
S. Khrushchev and Lyndon B. Johnson conference in Glassboro, N.J.; the
1964-65 World's Fair, Flushing, N.Y.; the momentous 1968 Democratic
National Convention, Chicago; the 1968 California Democratic Primary and
assassination of presidential candidate Robert Kennedy; the first NASA
space shoot at Cape Canaveral, Fla.; video for both the American Medical
Association and the American Dental Association conferences; as well as
numerous golf opens, football games and other sporting events.
John was an
extremely active person whose energy extended to both his family life
and his many hobbies. He was an avid expert ham radio operator and on
the ARRL Honor Roll. He belonged to the Pilgrim Amateur Radio Club,
Provincetown; Falmouth Amateur Radio Association, Falmouth; and the
Barnstable Amateur Radio Club, Barnstable. He belonged to the Brewster
Men's Club. He was a consummate gardener, well known for his roses. He
enjoyed photography, traveling, sailing, building boats, genealogy and
ceramics. He downhill skied until he was 70.
A church service will be held at Church of the Holy Spirit, 204 Monument
Road, Orleans, (508-255-0433), at 10 a.m., on Wednesday, March 5, 2008.
Nickerson Funeral Home, Orleans, (508-255-0259) will be handling
arrangements.
