Elijah Kent Swift Jr., died at the JML Care Center, on March 30, 2007. Kent, AI1W, as he was known, was as close to being a permanent fixture of FARA as anyone could get, having been a member of the club for 29 years and served until 2000 as Treasurer when he retired. Kent was also a fixture around the Town of Falmouth having owned and run Gun and Tackle at the head of Falmouth Inner Harbor for years. He was also very active in the Falmouth Historical Society, serving as a Director for many years, and as a Trustee of Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute. For many years Kent was a permanent fixture at Field Day, helping out with the erection of the site, particularly the towers and antennas. He was responsible for the acquisition of the first military crank up tower we owned and was the resident expert on erecting it. Many of us owe Kent a serious debt of gratitude for that since we would probably have all eventually killed ourselves or at least become permanently maimed, had we continued our practice of erecting three to four 50 foot Rohn 25 towers every year. Besides, we became seriously short of willing and able climbers as we all got along in years. There is no doubt that Kent will leave a void in FARA and we will all miss his usual appearances at meetings and events often with XYL Arlette, N1LTX. Kent took his membership in FARA quite seriously and he never missed elections, the annual Christmas party, Field Day, and any community service events we ran. Every Falmouth Road Race would find Kent on duty at Oyster Pond Road and was a regular participant in the Cape Cod Marathon.
A memorial service will be held at 2
p.m., on Tuesday, April 3, at the First Congregational Church, 68 Main
St., Falmouth. Burial is private.
