Making Satellite Contacts on VHF/UHF

Geoff Allsup, W1OH, made an informative presentation on amateur satellite operations.   The presentation file can be viewed at: https://www.k5nd.net/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Amateur-Radio-Satellites-V1.pdf

Geoff pointed out that satellite contacts can be made with just an HT using the FM satellites.  While a HT supporting duplex operation is desirable, it is possible to make contacts with a non-duplex HT.  I have listened to a few FM satellite passes since Geoff's presentation, using my Baofeng HT.

Satellite pass information can be accessed via the app SatSat for the iPhone/iPad or the app ISS Detector for the Android phones/tablets.  A copy of Geoff's satellite "cheat sheet", listing various useful satellite details, can be accessed via the link at the bottom of the page.

Detailed information regarding amateur satellites and satellite operations can be found on the AMSat website, https://www.amsat.org/

As Geoff mentioned, satellite operations are a good alternative during the current HF propagation conditions.  Give it a try!
