Cape Cod ARES Winter Operations Exercise

The Cape Cod and Islands District Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) conducted a winter operations exercise to test its capability in establishing communications with stations within its district, and outside it, under emergency conditions. The operational exercise called “Dark Shadows” tested the ability of several stations to communicate with a centrally located command station in Sandwich, MA. This was also a drill to test some of our Hospital stations, primary EOC stations, shelters and other ARES member home stations. Unlike many previous exercises, this one also featured home stations prominently as they are vital in keeping with the scenario being used for the exercise. The exercise attempted to build upon the lessons learned from our past operational exercises. This time, we did not concentrate mainly on expedient setup of equipment outdoors. We attempted to operate our gear using emergency power within our served agency communications centers, EOCs, primary stations and home stations. Emergency power was the primary focus of our exercise.

FARA members participated in the exercise, operating from Falmouth Hospital as shown below, the FARA club station on JBCC as shown above, and member home stations.  Gerry Campbell took the image above of FARA members operating from the club station and Charlie Bresnahan supplied the Falmouth Hospital images.
