International Lighthouse Weekend 2003 at Nobska Light, USA-550

A view of Nobska Light from the water with the top of our "shack" just visible above the brush. Our faithful TH5 on its 50 foot military crank up is fully visible and it worked well indeed.

What a view - this is really tough operating in the field! Not much traffic in the Sound or the Hole visible this year, but the Vineyard is visible on a typical hot, hazy, and humid mid-August day. The 50 foot crank up is in the foreground and Great Harbor is visible to the right, the northern entrance to the "Hole" is just beyond that, and Vineyard Sound stretches off into the distance on the left. This is indeed a perfect operating site!

Andy, AB1BX plugs away on 20m from the comfortable air conditioned operating position in the van. Gee, why didn't we set the operating table up this year so it had a view of the sound? It was so foggy most of the weekend there wasn't much to see anyway so maybe it was just as well.
Jan, K5MA at the operating position plugging away on 20 CW. Unfortunately there was not a lot of CW activity in this event so even Jan reverted to Phone after eking out what he could on CW.

Ben, W1VZT does the early morning shift on Sunday. He's checking a paper log? We did have our share of strange problems with CT running in DXpedition mode this year. Most of the 20m contacts were logged on 432 MHz, not by design but by software bug. 40m got logged as 20m contacts - confusing? For a first-timer at an event like this Ben did very well and thank the gods that he did keep a paper log. I don't think I would ever have gotten the log straight without some paper notes.
The van viewed from beyond the tower with Nantucket Sound in the background. Here you can't even see the Vineyard and much of the weekend very little of the Sound was visible. Not one of our better late summer days on the Cape! A new addition this year was the portable head located just behind the van and behind the stand of bushes. We wouldn't want any of those we wedding party pictures taken from the area just above us to show the porta-potty, would we?

Packing it in around noon on Sunday because we had a forecast for heavy thunder shower activity that afternoon. None of us were brave enough to try taking the tower down in a tropical down pour with wind and lightning dancing around us. The TH5 makes quite a sail so we  packed it in early. John the "Chief", N1LNF is descending from the van carrying the TS-850 under his raincoat and Jo, N1LNE is opening the door on K1BI's Blazer so John can slip it right in there without getting it wet. It was raining lightly all through the take down.
