| The nerve center of the communication function for the Cape Cod Marathon is the conference room at the Falmouth Fire Station that serves as a temporary Emergency Operations Center. John Gould (WX1K), Lyn Gould (N1LYN), and Al Robbins (KB1HJC) man the 2m and 70cm operating positions while keeping an eye on the wall display of the race course mobiles equipped with APRS equipment. |

Before the start of the race things aren't quite so hectic and Lyn, N1LYN is opening the net to check on those operators who were supposed to be on station at the starting gun. She's also keeping an eye on the APRS mobile units to make sure all of them are position reporting properly. This year we ran five mobile APRS units. |
| The projection screen display (above) is driven by Saul Dinman's (K1BI) laptop and the FARA's new Kenwood TM-D700A dual band transceiver with internal TNC. The entire route can be seen on the screen. With five units being tracked, there's plenty of activity going on with each of the units beaconing position information every 30 seconds. The large projection display makes it a relatively simple matter to direct the closest unit to pickup a runner in distress anywhere on the course. APRS is better suited to this type of application than any other method of doing it. |
